ABOUT GERMAN SHEPHERDS

The German Shepherd breed traces its origins back to the late 19th century in Germany, where it was developed to be the ideal herding and working dog. It is believed to descend from various sheepdogs used throughout the German countryside, selectively bred for intelligence, strength, and trainability. The German Shepherd is a versatile working dog originally used for herding sheep, but its remarkable abilities have made it a top choice for many other roles, including police, military, search and rescue, and service work.

Known for their athletic build and striking appearance, German Shepherds are large, powerful dogs with a well balanced and muscular frame. Males typically stand 60–65 centimetres at the withers and weigh 30–40 kilos, while females are slightly smaller. This breed combines strength with elegance, and its confident posture and keen expression add to its commanding presence.

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and eager to work, making them one of the easiest breeds to train. They thrive on structure and mental stimulation and respond well to consistent, reward-based training. Their desire to please and quick learning ability allow them to excel in a wide range of dog sports and activities, including obedience, agility, protection work, scent detection, and tracking.

While German Shepherds are naturally protective, they are not typically excessive barkers. However, they are alert and will vocalize when they sense unfamiliar people or situations, making them excellent watchdogs. With proper training and socialization, they can distinguish between real threats and normal day to day activity.

German Shepherds form deep bonds with their families and are known for their loyalty and affection. They often follow their owners from room to room and enjoy being involved in family life. Though they are not lap dogs, they often seek physical closeness and enjoy being petted and included in group activities. Like any breed, individual temperament can vary, and consistent training and early socialization are key to developing a well rounded adult dog.

They generally get along well with other dogs and pets, especially when raised together, but some males particularly younger ones may show dominance or same-sex aggression. Early socialization and controlled introductions are important to prevent such issues.

German Shepherds shed all year round and heavily during seasonal changes in spring and fall. Regular brushing several times a week is recommended, especially during heavy shedding periods. While show dogs are kept in full coat with minimal trimming, the same grooming standard can be applied to German Shepherds kept as family pets to maintain their health and appearance.

HOW WE BECAME GERMAN SHEPHERD BREEDERS

Thanks for visiting our website!
My name is Austin James Stokes, and together with my family, we are the proud owners of German Shepherd Haven. Since 2015, my wife and I have been passionately breeding German Shepherds, one of the most intelligent and loyal dog breeds in the world.

We’re lifelong pet lovers, and our journey into breeding began with the goal of helping families find the perfect four-legged addition to their homes. Over the years, our love and knowledge of German Shepherds have only grown. These dogs continually amaze us with their intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. There’s always something new to learn from them.

My first experience with a German Shepherd goes back to when I was just 10 years old. It was during a Christmas holiday that my parents surprised me with a beautiful German Shepherd puppy, whom I named Max. Max became more than just a pet—he was my best friend, my comforter, and my adventure buddy. He seemed to understand everything I felt and was always there when I needed him most. I often joked that he could talk, because he understood me better than most people did.

Years later, I met my wife in college. She instantly fell in love with Max and eventually convinced her parents to get her a German Shepherd too. That shared love for the breed brought us even closer. Our dogs would play together for hours, and we always dreamed of raising these amazing animals together. Sadly, I lost Max during our college years, but his memory has stayed with us every step of the way.

After we got married, our passion for German Shepherds led us to start breeding them ourselves. Today, we live with our two wonderful kids on a 3-acre property, where our German Shepherds have plenty of space to run, play, and grow into confident, healthy dogs.

Our mission is to help families like yours find the perfect, well-socialized, and well-trained German Shepherd puppy. With years of hands-on experience and a deep understanding of this incredible breed, we are committed to raising puppies that are not only beautiful but also intelligent, loyal, and ready to become a beloved member of your family.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly, highly trainable, and protective companion, you’re in the right place.
